Forty    August, 1997

It's the things that make you feel
Memories and such
Recurring events
That give peace, feel at home
Stir some ancient fiber

It's walking on the tundra above timberline
High intensity sunlight through an ink blue sky
It's the way the leaves flutter
on some behemoth cottonwood tree
moved by some dry August breeze

It's the dripping rain in an old growth forest
the tireless lapping ocean waves
                It's the mountains
                It's the plains

It's my heart going out to my children
thinking of their childhood
               Did I do enough

               Did I do it right
               Does it matter

It's the lesson of the level and the horse
knowing that things are just that
And you should never hold onto them
they will be stolen, lost, decay
It's knowing when to buy and when to sell

It's looking in the mirror
really seeing yourself
knowing who you are

strong and weak points

finding your niche
enjoying every moment

I THINK I LIKE BEING FORTY
